The Nerdy Black Girl Journal
Dear Journal
There are many websites that are authored by black girl nerds, however, I have not seen any geared toward theater geeks such as myself. I'm not saying that there are none, I'm just saying that I have not seen any. In any case, welcome to this one! I am the nerdy black girl otherwise known as "Msstagedoll" and this is my journal, open and exposed for your entertainment and enlightenment.
I am an actor, and not just any type of actor, a Musical Theater actor. Usually considered a bonafied theater geek. That's fine. I'll be that. I have found that black actors are a rare breed, especially in theater, and I have been told by several people in my life that "black people don't do things like this". There are several things that I enjoy in life and am told that "black people don't do things like this". And of course I have encountered certain expectations from people of all races, as to what my personality will be, and what type of entertainment I enjoy.

- I like all types of music, from classical to rap, but on most days you may hear me enjoying gospel music, R&B, Alternative or Musical Theater.
- Social functions like going to the club is boring to me. I don't like getting dressed up and paying money to get groped by strange men. If they want to grope me, then they should be paying me, in which case I would be something like an exotic dancer, and that doesn't quite interest me either, but I would love to play one on stage.
- I hate shows like Basketball wives, because the silly women piss me off, and I can't do anything about it. Too much stress. I'm trying to keep my mind space clear of my own drama.
- I like shows like Basketball wives, because of the clothes. :-) (Yes, contradiction).
- I love my curvy shape. I may be a theater geek, but I love looking like an "around the way girl". If there is a new term for this type of girl, I don't know what it is because I'm out of touch.
- I have had weird celebrity crushes that I can't mention yet, because I don't think y'all are ready.
- I love watching Michael Buble sing on PBS.
Okay, this is enough info for now, but trust, I will give more info later.
So in my journal, I plan on talking about things I have encountered in theater in Theater, race related and non race related.
Race related situations like auditioning for roles meant for women of another race, costuming conundrums (when people don't know what to do with your hair, or having to wear a flesh toned costume that is obviously made for a woman of a certain color flesh), looking for positive roles for black women, finding shows that are casting black women.
Non race related topics like going union, aspiring to Broadway or No, getting started in the industry, taking classes, balancing family/work and theater, the loss of the "Smash" series...etc.
So stay tuned!
Thank you for visiting this Blog. If you have any topics that you would like discussed, just message me and maybe I can address it. I hope you enjoy!
